Serving the Spanish capital since 2005, Madrid’s Welcome Skate Shop is an internationally recognised bastion of European skateboarding. Representing the gold standard for skate shops the world over, Welcome get the nod from the gold standard in footwear, Nike SB; the iconic Blazer Mid receives a Madridian makeover, courtesy of the city’s flagship skate shop.Â
Adopting a supportive mid-top construction, the Zoom Blazer Mid has a structured design that borrows from traditional basketball-style shoes for maximum ankle protection against tweaks, rolls, and stray boards. Despite its slightly raised collar, cutting the shoe just short of a high top means the shoe maintains the mobility of its low-top counterpart, ideal for every skateboarding discipline.Â
Welcome’s iteration of the shoe evolves as you wear it, box fresh in snowy-white leather and wearing away once skated, revealing an earthy beetroot suede. Its combination of fabrics blend aesthetic appeal with on board functionality, offering grip, flick, and durability without sacrificing the Blazer’s timelessly tasteful silhouette.Â
The midsole wears the Blazer’s distinctive “Artex”-style crackled foxing tape, using a vulcanised construction to join the shoe’s outsole to the upper and providing maximum board feel. Its sole sports the grippy Nike herringbone tread, this version using translucent rubber to reveal unique Nike and Welcome decals underfoot.Â
Further Welcome embellishments are sprinkled throughout the design, including a houndstooth-patterned lining and laces, star shaped toe box perforations, and gold embroidery and a braided leather strip at the heel. If the poppy houndstooth laces don’t work for you, these can be swapped out for the beetroot leather alternative. Â
